An informal glossary of some of the terms we encounter. Some are taken directly from authors, where not specifically noted they are my own.


A movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression. – Bell Hooks


A set of formalized rules or relationships that are widely accepted.

Movement (“social movement” specifically)

A set of opinions and beliefs in a population which represents preferences for changing some elements of the social structure and/or reward distribution of a society – John McCarthy and Mayer Zald


unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power – Merriam-Webster


Institutionalized sexism – Bell Hooks


1. prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially :discrimination against women;

2. behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex – Merriam-Webster
